What is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is our Helper. There are three ways in which we experience Him in our lives. The first is called the with experience. This speaks of the Holy Spirit coming along side of us to convict us of our sin and to help us come to the LORD. The second is the in experience, which refers to the Holy Spirit dwelling in a believer when he accepts Him as his Lord and Savior. These first two experiences are mentioned in John 14:16-17. The third aspect is the upon experience that signifies the empowering of the believer for Christian service. In doing so, the power of God’s Spirit will flow through us and touch the lives of those around us. Jesus describes this outpouring of the Holy Spirit in John 7:38, “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” The reference to the upon experience is found in Acts 1:8 which says, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” This act of the Holy Spirit empowering the believer is what is known as the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Firstly it would be good to mention that in Isaiah 11:1-2 the Holy Spirit is referred to as the seven-fold Spirit. The Spirit of:

    1) Wisdom
    2) Might
    3) Understanding
    4)Knowledge
    5) Counsel
    6) the Fear of the Lord
    7) the Lord

Believers can experience the Holy Spirit in two distinct ways:
Firstly – when we get saved – the presence of the Holy Spirit
Secondly- when we get filled with the Holy Spirit – the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

Having a relationship with Jesus does not necessarily mean that you have a relationship with the Holy Spirit. You need to acknowledge Him and invite Him. Acts 19: 1-6 shows believers who believed in Jesus, but were not yet filled with the Holy Spirit and Paul laid hands on them.

    Acts 19

1And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

2He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

3And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.

4Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

5When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

6And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

    How do we get baptised?

    Luke 11:9-13

So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 If a son asks for bread[d] from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.

It is as simple as that. Just ask God for the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Are we only filled with the Holy Spirit once?

    Refer to Ephesians 5:18-20

18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We need to fill ourselves daily. Reading Bible, giving our thanks and praying.
