Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what He had promised. This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness”. Rom 4:20-22

Paul is speaking here about Abraham and the promise God made to him and his wife Sarah, that they would have a child in their old age. In fact, both Abraham and Sarah were well beyond the age when people normally had children, and most likely it would have been physically impossible for them to have a child had God not miraculously intervened.

This verse is given as an example of the kind of unconditional faith and trust God wants us as Christ followers to have in Him. Being approximately 100 years old and knowing that conceiving a child was humanly impossible, Abraham had every reason to doubt God’s promise. But instead he chose to trust God and believe what God said would in fact happen. “He did not waver through unbelief”; instead he chose to believe and “was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God”. Abraham understood who was in control, and that “God had power to do what He had promised”. Do we really believe God is in control of our circumstances? When God tells us something in His Word, do we believe He means what He says? Does God have the power to do anything, especially things that seem impossible from our viewpoint?

In what area(s) of life are you doubting God right now? What circumstances or trials seem completely overwhelming or humanly impossible? Like Abraham, we have a choice to make. Will we waver? Or will we believe? Take a step of faith and trust God; allow Him to stretch and strengthen your faith. You will see amazing things happen.
